George Soros, a Hungarian-American investor and philanthropist, is a prominent figure in global finance and political activism. Born in Budapest in 1930, Soros survived the Nazi occupation of Hungary during World War II and later emigrated to England in 1947. He studied at the London School of Economics, where he was influenced by the philosopher Karl Popper's ideas on open society.

Soros began his career in finance in the 1950s and eventually founded his own hedge fund, Soros Fund Management, in 1969. He became known for his expertise in currency speculation and was famously dubbed "the man who broke the Bank of England" for his role in the 1992 Black Wednesday crisis, where he profited from short selling the British pound.
